Database Management

What is a database?

A database is an organised collection of information - in this case stored on a computer.

Databases can help organize and enhance your site content. Sites with dynamic content usually need an underlying database.

The database that we use is MySQL - a fast, stable, reliable and easy to use solution.

Why would you want a database?

  • To collect information from your users. For example, you might want to create a survey, getting the visitor to your site to enter some information. This info would be stored in the database and could be extracted later into a spreadsheet for example.

  • To enable you (or others that you nominate) to update a page. For example, you might want to display a page that lists coming events - you could enter an admin page and change the contents of the database from time to time - your visitors would see the changes when ever they came to your site.

Managing a database can be quite complicated - especially if you wish to integrate it with your web site.

If you are familiar with MySQL, PHP and HTML, you can use our hosting service to create a very sophisticated web site - and you only require a hosting account.

However, if databases and programming are not your thing, we can create the pages for you.

The cost of this service is dependent on your requirements. To give you a rough idea, a custom built "coming events" page (such as the one described to the left) would cost about $100 (plus an optional $10 / month if you wanted us to maintain it).

Note that all prices EXCLUDE GST and are in New Zealand dollars.
